3 Fall Hojicha Lattes (Using Trader Joe's Ingredients)
How to make an iced hojicha latte 3 ways using seasonal Trader Joe's finds. Each starts from the same roasted hojicha base, then gets a flavored cream top: Salted Maple Butter, Pumpkin Spice, and Kinako & Pumpkin.
If you're a fan of hojicha and all things cozy and autumnal, these three hojicha lattes are for you. I'm using a few seasonal Trader Joe's finds to create three creamy, fall-inspired drinks: Salted Maple Butter, Pumpkin Spice, and Kinako & Pumpkin.
Each latte starts with the same simple hojicha base, then gets topped with a flavored cream and a seasonal Trader Joe's ingredient for an extra layer of flavor. They're cozy, nutty, creamy, and basically autumn in a cup.
Before making these, be sure to check out Trader Joe's for their seasonal products. Some of these ingredients are limited-time finds, so grab them while you can!
Latte #1: Salted Maple Butter Cream Top Hojicha Latte
A little sweet, a little salty, and packed with maple flavor. The maple butter melts into the milk while the creamy maple topping floats on top for the perfect cozy hojicha latte.

Latte #2: Pumpkin Spice Cream Top Hojicha Latte
This one is basically pumpkin pie in a cup. Trader Joe's Pumpkin Butter adds a rich, spiced pumpkin flavor to the bottom of the latte, while their Pumpkin Spice Cream Cheese Spread makes an unexpectedly delicious creamy topping.

Latte #3: Kinako & Pumpkin Cream Top Hojicha Latte
If you love the nutty flavor of kinako, this might be my favorite of the three. The roasted soybean powder pairs surprisingly well with pumpkin butter and hojicha, creating a creamy latte with a deep, nutty flavor and just the right amount of autumn spice.

Tips for Making These Hojicha Lattes
- Don't skip sifting the hojicha. Hojicha powder can clump easily, and sifting helps create a smoother latte.
- Keep the cream top pourable. You want it thick and creamy, but not whipped to stiff peaks. This makes it easier to pour over the latte and gives you that pretty layered effect.
- Adjust the sweetness to your liking. The Trader Joe's seasonal ingredients add sweetness on their own, so taste the latte before adding anything extra.
- Use hot, not boiling, water. Around {80°C|175°F} is ideal for whisking the hojicha while keeping its smooth, roasted flavor.
- Make them pretty! A final sprinkle of flaky sea salt, pumpkin spice, or kinako makes these lattes look just as good as they taste.

Instructions
- Latte #1 — Salted Maple Butter
- Make the cream top. Add 1 tbsp Trader Joe's Maple Butter, 4 tbsp heavy cream, and 1 tbsp milk to a small bowl. Whisk until thick, creamy, and slightly aerated: thick enough to sit on top of the latte, but still pourable. Set aside.
- Prepare the hojicha. Sift 1 1/2 tsp hojicha powder into a bowl to remove clumps. Add 3 tbsp hot water and whisk until smooth and frothy, using a quick W- or M-shaped motion.
- Assemble the latte. Spread 1 tbsp Trader Joe's Maple Butter around the bottom of a glass. Fill with ice, then pour in 1/2 cup milk followed by the hojicha.
- Add the cream top. Pour the salted maple butter cream over the latte and finish with a pinch of flaky sea salt.
- Latte #2 — Pumpkin Spice
- Make the cream top. Add 1 tbsp Trader Joe's Pumpkin Spice Cream Cheese Spread, 4 tbsp heavy cream, and 1 tbsp milk to a small bowl. Whisk until smooth, creamy, and slightly thickened. Keep it pourable rather than overly stiff. Set aside.
- Prepare the hojicha. Sift 1 1/2 tsp hojicha powder into a bowl, add 3 tbsp hot water, and whisk until smooth and frothy, using a quick W- or M-shaped motion.
- Assemble the latte. Spread 1 tbsp Trader Joe's Pumpkin Butter around the bottom of a glass. Add ice, then pour in 1/2 cup milk followed by the hojicha.
- Finish with the cream top. Pour the pumpkin spice cream over the latte and finish with a sprinkle of pumpkin spice.
- Latte #3 — Kinako & Pumpkin
- Make the cream top. Add 1 tbsp kinako, 1 tbsp Trader Joe's Pumpkin Butter, 4 tbsp heavy cream, and 1 tbsp milk to a small bowl. Whisk until smooth, creamy, and slightly thickened. The cream should stay pourable so it layers easily over the latte. Set aside.
- Prepare the hojicha. Sift 1 1/2 tsp hojicha powder into a bowl, add 3 tbsp hot water, and whisk until smooth and frothy using a W- or M-shaped motion.
- Assemble the latte. Spread 1 tbsp Trader Joe's Pumpkin Butter around the bottom of a glass. Add ice, then pour in 1/2 cup milk followed by the hojicha.
- Add the cream top. Pour the kinako and pumpkin cream over the latte and finish with a sprinkle of kinako.
- Don't skip sifting the hojicha. The powder clumps easily, and sifting makes for a much smoother latte.
- Keep the cream top pourable. You want it thick and creamy, but not whipped to stiff peaks, so it pours cleanly over the latte for that layered effect.
- Taste before adding sweetener. The Trader Joe's seasonal ingredients bring their own sweetness, so try the latte first.
- Use hot, not boiling, water. Around 175°F keeps the hojicha smooth and roasted rather than bitter.
- These are limited-time finds. Check the Trader Joe's seasonal shelves for the maple butter, pumpkin butter, and pumpkin spice cream cheese spread while they last.
- Make it pretty. A final sprinkle of flaky sea salt, pumpkin spice, or kinako makes these lattes look as good as they taste.
